A group of teenagers embark on the beginning of their adult lives with the help of ambition, talent, good teachers and of course each other. Some tackle with absentee parents and others with parents who are too involved, but as they work through the issues of being young in New York they come to terms with sexuality, poverty and the reality of their chosen careers.

Young men and women audition for coveted spots at the New York High School of Performing Arts. Those who make the cut discover that it takes a lot of hard work to become a star and sometimes difficult decisions have to be made.
