Free Play for Kids is nominating our Free Food Program Teams: Tim Adams, Ruke Okome and Diana Siwila for an outstanding job to pivot extremely fast after the lockdown occurred to provided FREE food to families in Edmonton.

Tim and Ruke were preparing for the Spring Program that helps 2,000 kids play sport for free when everything came to a halt. With the lockdown announced, programming immediately had to stop, but Tim and Ruke did not stop working.

They knew the immense impact that this lockdown would have on the kids and families in our program. Many of these families relied on school food programs and out-of-school care to best provide for themselves and their children.
Ruke and Tim couldn’t just sit and watch.

Four days later, the Free Food Program began.

They reached out to the families, bought groceries, packed food hampers, and arranged delivery routes. That week – 60 families received food.

The week was exciting, but they knew they needed more help. Diana joined the team, a Support Coach from our program. After a year of mentoring 10 Jr. High and High school students and coaching 120 kids, she had a passion for helping the families.

Five months later, the team is now feeding 240 families per week.

And they do not plan to stop anytime soon; the team is planning to integrate the food program into the sports program to teach kids about nutrition, cooking, and how to continue eating healthy.
