Unusual church which is constructed by carving it out from a piece of volcanic rock in the 12th – 13th Century AD. The interior of the church is so tight and small that it cannot fit a reasonable size congregation from the nearby villages. The Sunday church service have to be conducted partially outside the church. After the dawn service was completed in the church, the priests walked out of the church and through a narrow passageway, climb to the top of the church ground. Here he would give the Sunday Sermons.
This religion of Ethiopian Orthodox Christian is very ancient. Some of the songs sang is about 2,000 years old. They were made better by a priest, Saint Yared, who give it a structure and rhythm. The priests on that day did not sing it in unison. It is not as melodious as I would like it to be.
